Directions

  1. In a large bowl, beat 1/2 cup of the butter with an electric mixer on medium speed 30 seconds. Add 3/4 cup sugar; beat until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and 1 teaspoon of the vanilla. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Beat flour mixture and milk alternatively into egg mixture. Pour into pastry shell; set aside.
  2. Heat water and chocolate over low heat until chocolate melts. Stir in 2/3 cup sugar; heat just until boiling. Remove from heat; add remaining 1/4 cup butter and 1 teaspoon vanilla, stirring until butter melts. Pour chocolate mixture over batter in pie shell. Sprinkle with nuts. Bake in a 350 degree F oven about 50 minutes. Cool about 30 minutes on wire rack. Serve warm or cool. Makes 10 servings.

Great starting point as a recipe. Now that I've made it once I'd make some modifications. I found the cake to be very dense (maybe a little too dry) and the flavor is subtle.



However, I made this cake pie to be eaten with ice cream. By itself I wouldn't consider it a party pleaser.



I think all I might do next time is add more chocolate (either melted baking chocolate and/or lots of cocoa powder) and a little spice (like cinnamon). Not sure if the separate chocolate mixture was meant to mix with the sugary cake batter but I did. To increase the flavor more, after it bakes and cools, make a chocolate ganache and pour it over the top of the cake-pie (as extra flavor and sealer).
