Make-It-Mine Mac and Cheese

Make a family dinner that'll please everyone. Basic mac and cheese is just what the kids want, then choose a few additional ingredients for any of our more grown up flavor profiles for a pasta dinner adults will enjoy, too!

Make-It-Mine Mac and Cheese

Directions

  1. Cook macaroni according to package directions; drain. Return macaroni to saucepan.
  2. Meanwhile, for cheese sauce, in a medium saucepan cook onion in hot butter until tender. Stir in flour and pepper. Add milk all at once. Cook and stir over medium heat until slightly thickened and bubbly. Add cheeses, stirring until melted.
  3. Pour cheese sauce over macaroni; stir to coat with sauce. Cook over low heat for 2 to 3 minutes or until heated through, stirring frequently. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Oven Macaroni and Cheese:

Prepare as above, except increase milk to 2 1/2 cups. Transfer macaroni mixture to a 2-quart casserole. Bake, uncovered, in a 350 degrees F oven for 25 to 30 minutes or until bubbly. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Pesto

Swirl 2 tablespoons purchased basil pesto into pasta mixture.

In a large skillet melt 1 tablespoon butter over medium-low heat. Add 1 large red onion, halved lengthwise and thinly sliced. Cook, covered, for 13 to 15 minutes or until onions are tender, stirring occasionally. Uncover; cook and stir over medium-high heat for 3 to 5 minutes or until golden. Stir caramelized onions into pasta mixture.
