Ingredients

  • 8  cups apple cider or apple juice
  • 1/4  cup orange juice
  • 2  tablespoons packed brown sugar
  • 3  inches stick cinnamon
  • 1  tablespoon whole allspice
  • 1  teaspoon whole cloves
  • 1  teaspoon whole cardamom (optional)
  •   Peel from 1 orange
  •   Ground nutmeg

Directions

1. In a large saucepan, combine cider, orange juice, and sugar.

2. Wrap whole spices and orange peel in 100 percent cotton cheesecloth; add to saucepan. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Cover and simmer about 30 minutes. Discard spice bag. Serve cider in mugs, sprinkled with nutmeg. Makes about 8 (7-ounce) servings.

Test Kitchen Tip: Use a vegetable peeler to peel the orange, making sure to get only the outer part and as little as possible of the bitter white layer under the orange skin.
