- 1 medium banana, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Pinch salt
- 2 cups whole milk
- 2 cups water
- 1/4 cup masa harina
- 1 3 1/4 - 3 1/2ounce disk Mexican-style sweet chocolate, chopped (1/2 cup)
- 1/4 cup finely chopped piloncillo (Mexican dark brown sugar) or 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/8 teaspoon ground anise
- Thinly sliced banana (optional)
1. In a large saucepan combine the medium banana, the 2 tablespoons brown sugar, the butter, cinnamon, and salt; cook over medium-low heat about 2 minutes or until banana slices are caramelized. Transfer banana to a blender. Add milk. Cover and blend until smooth; set aside.
2. Return the saucepan to medium heat. Add the water; heat until water is warm. Gradually add masa harina, whisking until combined. Add banana-milk mixture, chocolate, piloncillo, and ground anise. Reduce heat to medium-low. Cook and stir about 15 minutes or just until mixture comes to a simmer and chocolate is completely melted. Serve immediately. If desired, garnish with additional thinly sliced banana.
