Our 70's Fireplace

We have a similar fireplace, paneling and ceiling beams. We painted the paneling and ceiling beams a creamy yellow and they look great. The three other walls have the same panel waiscotting that we also painted creamy yellow. The top portion of the three other walls are painted a deep green, to ground the room. We haven't addressed our ugly fireplace yet. You might want to consider built in cabinets and shelves on either side of the fireplace, too.
 

I like the brick, but the wood paneling on the sides bothers me, and the wood beams on the ceiling are strange. I dream of a wider, bigger mantel.
