Antime you get hand me downs, don't ditch it. Turn into something else. Cover your sofa with a sofa cover you probably can find at Target or Walmart. Make it a bright color. Paint the wall. Buy sofa pillows with a contrasting bright color that pops.
 

We have odds & ends of hand-me-down furniture and no decor.
