Dog and Cat First Aid Kit

Keep the following supplies handy in a lunch box or cleaning-tool tote. First aid does not substitute for veterinary treatment; but it does provide quick lifesaving attention for a sick or injured pet.

• Adhesive tape
• Diphenhydramine (such as Benadryl) for antihistamine relief of insect bites or stings
• Eyedropper (for oral medications)
• Gauze
• Hydrogen peroxide (3 percent)
• Milk of magnesia or activated charcoal (to absorb poison)
• Muzzle
• Nonstick bandages (Telfa pads)
• Rectal thermometer and lubricant (petroleum jelly)
• Scissors or pocketknife to cut gauze and tape
• Styptic powder to stanch bleeding
• Towels and cloth
