A Bright and Budget-Friendly Makeover

These suburban homeowners gave their kitchen a brighter outlook and kept their budget intact by maintaining the room's footprint and by refurbishing their existing cabinetry.

    • A Punch of Paint

When these homeowners decided to make over their kitchen they knew they wanted to add tons of color and personality. Now, bold colors make this kitchen pop and stand out in style. They make this bright kitchen work by balancing muted tones on kitchen walls with brighter colors for accents.

    • Island Style

Hold down costs in a kitchen makeover by maintaining the original footprint of the room. By updating surfaces and switching out the old refrigerator for a counter-depth fridge, the kitchen gained more floor space. More floor space meant space to expand the island, which was done using two new stock cabinets and an old sink cabinet.

    • Got Curves?

The narrow serving area of the previous island did little more than collect clutter. A generous curve on the new countertop increases serving space without widening the island's footprint.

    • Chip Collage

Paper collages on the pantry wall reiterate the colorful palette throughout the kitchen. These delightful bird portraits were made using color chips from the paint store.

    • Simple Strategies

Straightforward changes gave the kitchen an expensive look and enhanced efficiency. Removing kitchen cabinets around the window brought more natural light into the room. Open shelving exposes more of the patterned tile backsplash that leads the eye upward.

Editor's Tip: Carrying the tile around the window enclosure visually expands the space.

    • Don't Be Square

Ceramic tile is a classic kitchen treatment. In this kitchen, more muted tones were used on the backsplash to balance out the bright island. The luxe look can be inexpensive if you search for bargains. Look at home centers or check favorite tile designers.

    • Color Crazy

The dining area is a great place to have fun with color. Bold shades in furnishings, artwork, and accessories -- all the easily changeable things -- inject a sense of fun and playfulness in a family kitchen. A white pedestal table grounds the space, while colorful chairs and a plaid rug tie the bright palette together.

    • String Along

An immense globe pendant light fashioned from string hangs over the kitchen table. The statement-making shape and scale of the light is balanced out by its simple white color. The texture of the globe adds another dimension to the dining area's design.

    • Give 'Em the Boot

Turn everyday objects into charming table accents. Children's boots become vases with a spray coat of bubblegum-pink paint in a matte finish. A slim cylinder vase was inserted into the boots to hold water for the fresh flowers.

      Make it Sparkle

Spray paint makes updating old furnishings a snap with the wide variety of paint finishes and colors available for all types of surfaces. This chair used a metallic paint to give old cafeteria chairs a new lease on life. The brushed-metal look links the chairs to the stainless-steel kitchen appliances.

      Barely There

With so much color introduced at the dining table, the curtains at the sliding glass doors needed to stay neutral to avoid competing focal points. Subtle visual interest was added to plain linen draperies with a tone-on-tone stencil in a botanical motif. This was done using fabric paint to keep the curtains washable.
