Kitchen Tour: Classic White U-Shape Kitchen

This beautiful kitchen, part of a condominium in a 100-year-old building, shows why white is a popular kitchen color scheme: It's fresh, versatile, and universally appealing.

White Kitchen Makeover

Architect homeowners learned what it was like to be clients themselves when they updated their kitchen. As they made decisions about the look of the space, they found themselves borrowing their favorite features from clients' homes and decided on this all-white scheme.

U-Shape Utility

The idea of adding a storage closet to the modest-size kitchen led to a full-fledged redo. The homeowners kept the U-shape layout but changed the positions of fixtures and appliances to improve views and function.

Stainless-Steel Range

A professional-grade range with matching hood replaced a peninsula-mounted cooktop and broken double oven. Because the homeowners don't cook a lot, they considered a smaller range, but they ultimately chose a 36-inch-wide model with a single oven and six burners.

Tile Backsplash

Prominent subway tile imparts vintage style amid modern ease. Besides adding visual appeal, the tile backsplash facilitates a quick cleanup of splashes and spills.

White Kitchen Cabinets

New sills and brackets beneath the wall-hung cabinets mimic the original architectural detailing you'd see in a home of the era.

Hidden Laundry

A stacked washer-dryer combo hides behind tall cabinet doors at the left end of the range wall, allowing the homeowners to tackle the laundry while completing other kitchen chores. The other option was to put the laundry by a small bath on the other side of the same wall, which would have been more expensive and not nearly as convenient.

Glass Cabinets

Wood cabinetry, painted a warm white, sets a classic tone for the kitchen, replacing cheap white laminate cabinets a former homeowner had installed in the late 1970s. A bank of glass-front upper units adds a sense of character and spaciousness. The dramatic effect of the reflecting glass also makes the space appear larger.

Bold Patterns

A botanical-pattern wallpaper adorns the breakfast area and transitions into the work core, where it complements the natural colors and patterns in the cashmere white granite countertops. Reproductions of vintage wallcoverings appear elsewhere in the couple's home.

Sink and Faucet

Modern bells and whistles plus vintage ruffles and flourishes equal an effective plumbing partnership. The sink is a deep pro-style model, great for hiding dirty dishes. A shapely bridge faucet teams with a dispenser for instant hot water and filtered cold water.

Kitchen Pantry

There's no need for a butler in this well-equipped, self-serve pantry. The walk-through annex between the kitchen and dining room houses the refrigerator and microwave oven, as well as a coffee bar and two refrigerator drawers, giving homeowners easy access to food and drinks. Having the refrigerator in the pantry frees up space in the work core and proves handy for meals in the dining room.
