Marc: The 48-Hour Challenge
Five of our favorite bloggers created clever weekend projects for outdoor living using $500 in materials from The Home Depot. Marc's blog is The Wood Whisperer, and here is the story of his project.
Post 1: Meet the Woodworker
My name is Marc Spagnuolo and I am a professional woodworker and video producer in Phoenix, Arizona.
Although I was always "handy" with tools, I didn't take woodworking seriously until my wife and I bought our first house. I remember receiving a table saw as a birthday present, and if you can believe it, I never even asked for it. I suppose this was my wife's way of saying, "I need new floors!" Well, simple house projects led to small furniture projects, and by that time I was completely hooked. My day job may have been in the world of biotech, but all day long my brain was in my garage. Much like a kid with a clubhouse, the shop was my sanctum, my creative space, and soon to be my place of business!
I have never been much of a risk taker. So when my wife first suggested leaving my career in biotech to pursue woodworking, I thought she was crazy. But with her reassurance, I took a leap of faith and started a small custom furniture business. It was a struggle for a while, but we made it work.
Although I was working at least ten hours a day in the shop, I still enjoyed watching woodworking shows on TV. But these shows were becoming harder to find. So instead of writing my local PBS station, I decided to make my own show on the Internet.
Two years and nearly 100 episodes later, The Wood Whisperer is still going strong and is my primary business. Now I am pursuing my own woodworking interests while taking my audience along for the educational and many times comical ride. I am also a columnist for Popular Woodworking Magazine and do an audio show with fellow podcaster Matt Vanderlist, called Wood Talk Online. All of my content can be found at my website, The Wood Whisperer.
