Laying Out and Cutting Drywall
About this Project
Drywall is inexpensive, and hanging and finishing skills are within the reach of a homeowner. But hanging drywall is difficult work. The sheets are heavy and unwieldy because they are so large. Most rooms are out of square, so cutting is often difficult.
Finishing drywall to a perfectly smooth surface takes three applications of compound and sandings for professional -- four or five for beginners. Finishing success relies in part on careful hanging. So, this is one job you may want to get estimates for hanging and finishing and hire the job out to a professional.
Check framing to make sure you have adequate nailing surfaces (see Building a Wall in Place, Related Projects). Add members that are missing. If you are covering an existing wall, locate all the joists and studs and clearly mark their locations on the walls and ceilings. Draft a strong helper-hanging drywall alone is nearly impossible.
