Staggered Display: Shelves in 6 Simple Steps

 

NOTE: This project starts with a pair of two-shelf laminated storage stackers commonly used for organizing shoes. When you purchase the units, they will be unassembled. Follow these basic steps.

 

Secure the sides of the first stacker (which will come unassembled) to the top. Measure the height of clear plastic compact disc boxes to determine the placement of the center shelf. Predrill new holes for the shelf and secure the shelf with screws. Use the white plastic plugs that come with the stacker to fill the manufacturer's predrilled holes. (You'll fill the holes you drilled later.)

Turn the stacker upside down and top it with a length of white laminate shelving cut to length so the ends extend beyond the shelf sides. (If you need to reduce the width of the board, cut the edge that will face the wall so that the particleboard center isn't exposed. If you have to cut an end, use white laminate tape to finish the exposed edge.) Drill through the top of the shelving and into the end of each side of the upside-down stacker; secure the shelf to the stacker using screws.

For the second stacker, secure the sides to the top. Flip the stacker upside down and top with a length of white laminate shelving, cut to length so the ends extend beyond the shelf sides. If you have to cut an end, use white laminate tape to finish the exposed edge. Drill through the top of the shelving and into the end of each side of the upside-down stacker; secure the shelf to the stacker using screws.

Position the first stacker atop the second stacker, staggering the alignment as shown for interest. Drill up through the underside of the bottom stacker's top and secure the stackers with short screws.

Fill the remaining screw holes with wood filler or wall compound, and let dry. Lightly sand filled spots, wipe with a tack cloth, and paint repairs to match the shelf.

 

Secure the shelves to the wall using flush-mount hardware and wall anchors.
