Avoiding Physical Strain

You are probably not accustomed to physical construction work, so it is quite possible for you to strain muscles or joints while engaging in remodeling work. Often, you feel fine while doing the work but wake up the next day in pain. Don't take chances. Follow these guidelines to avoid injury:

  • Don't overexert yourself when lifting heavy objects, or when repeatedly lifting lighter loads.
  • Get a helper to do some of the work, and take plenty of breaks.
  • Working in an awkward position can put a strain on your back and other areas of your body.
  • Take the time to move or to arrange things so that you are as comfortable as possible.
  • Lift with your legs, not your back. When picking up a heavy object, keep your back as upright and straight as possible. Bend your knees to reach the object.
