Open Porch

Porch and sunroom designs fall into four basic styles. Each style can be evaluated in terms of cost, complexity, and exposure to the elements. Start with one of the basic plans, then customize it to suit your needs and tastes.

An open porch is basically a deck covered by a roof structure supported by posts. It may be elevated or near ground level. Street-facing versions typically feature wide, welcoming stairways and perimeter railings as part of the overall entrance scheme. Large porches may incorporate more than one doorway, giving interiors added dimension and possibilities. On the complexity and material requirements scale, this is one of the easiest porches to design and construct.

This type of porch first gained popularity with North American homeowners during the late 1800s and influenced home design for several decades. Designed as an element of social interaction, the front-facing porch lost favor during the last half of the 20th century, replaced in part by backyard decks and patios that offer more privacy. Today, backyard porches are an option for homeowners who want privacy and shade while enjoying the outdoors.
