Hiring a Mover: 5 Mistakes Even Smart People Make

Moving always makes it onto those lists of "things most likely to cause stress." And no wonder! You're trusting someone to take charge of all of your most precious stuff--and deliver it back to you all in one piece. To make sure you're hiring the right mover (unfortunately, there are some unscrupulous ones out there), avoid these common mistakes.

You didn't do your homework

There are all sorts of ways to check out a moving company, from calling the better business bureau (bbb.org) or visiting protectyourmove.gov to find out if any consumer complaints have been lodged against the company, to asking for references. If you're smart, you'll do both. A reputable mover will be happy to provide you with names of happy customers. Call the customers and ask very specific questions about both the reliability of the company ("Did they do what they said they would, when they said they would, for the price they gave you?") and the work ethic of the personnel ("Were the workers on time, polite, and respectful of your belongings?")
