Weathersealing Underneath Doors

Common Options

Door sweep. This is the simplest solution if the threshold is above the level of the carpeting and flooring. Simply attach it so the sweep seals against the threshold.

Automatic sweep. This device uses a spring to raise itself as you open the door, then drops again when you close it.

Door shoe. A shoe makes a durable seal. To install one, you must remove the door and possibly plane it, too.

Bulb threshold. These work like a shoe. Bevel the door bottom, as shown. Replace the rubber bulb periodically.

Interlocking threshold. These devices make the tightest seal. Installing one calls for tricky carpentry and fitting, though.

Drip cap. If water seaps under your door and into the house, nail a drip cap to its outside face.

Storm door sweep. You can buy replacement rubber or plastic sweeps for these that install on the outside.

Garage door. You can weather-strip the bottom edge of a roll- or swing-up garage door with a rubber door gasket like this.

Regular cleaning will keep ceramic tile in good condition, but surfaces around an outdoor kitchen, barbecue, or dining space may become stained. To remove a stain, start with the steps outlined in the chart, below right. If these solutions don't work, ask a tile supplier to recommend a cleaning agent that's compatible with your tile.
