Introduction

Sometimes one of the toughest and potentially most expensive decisions you have to make on a building project is which, if any, new tools to buy. It seldom makes sense to buy high-priced power tools if you don't expect to use them regularly in the years to come. On the other hand, having access to good power tools makes the project go faster and often results in a better job.

One rule of thumb is to buy only one new power tool at a time. Learn how to use it safely and master its range of functions before making another investment. Many do-it-yourselfers like to look at each new project as an opportunity to add a new tool to their collection. Remember, needing a tool doesn't always mean having to buy it; you may be able to borrow the tool from a friend or neighbor. When that's not possible, consider renting.
