Working with Flexible Plastic Tubing

Common Tasks
Use insert fittings to connect PE tubing. Slip hose clamps over the ends of the tubing, push the tubing onto the insert, and tighten the clamp. Check that the serrations of the fittings are fully inserted in the tubing. The hose clamp should be positioned squarely on the serrations.

Attach PB to a metal stop valve with a compression nut and ferrule. A brass insert keeps the tubing from collapsing as the nut is tightened. A flexible tubing union joins two sections of tubing. Such a union should be tightened only by hand. You also can buy tees, ells, and other supply fittings.

Sometimes it takes a lot of muscle to push PE tubing over an insert fitting. Soak the tubing in hot water, or pour hot water over the tubing to soften it so it slips on easily. Use the same technique to dismantle a stubborn connection.

PB makes an excellent choice for stop-to-fixture hookups, allowing you a margin of error during installation. Avoid bending it excessively, or it may kink. Don't overtighten the nuts.
