Gluing and Clamping
Introduction
A joint will be stronger if you use glue in addition to nails or screws. For some projects that do not require great strength, glue alone will be enough.
Use contact cement to attach wood veneers or plastic laminates to wood surfaces. Apply the cement to both surfaces and let them dry. Align the parts precisely before you join them--the first bond is permanent (see Applying Laminate, Related Projects). Use paneling adhesives to attach sheet goods to walls (see Installing Paneling, Related Projects). For interior projects, use carpenter's glue with aliphatic resin. This is superior to standard white glue because it sets up faster, resists heat and moisture better, and is stronger. For the glue to work, however, the pieces must be clamped together firmly until the glue sets.
