Freeing a Binding Door

Step-by-Step
Loose hinge screws can cause sags. To tighten, wedge door open under the latch edge.

Remove screws and plug their holes with glue-coated scrap wood or dowel. Drive new screws into dowels. If the bottom edge binds, shim out the bottom hinge; shim out the top hinge for a top bind. For doors that don't bind but are difficult to close, insert shims under each of the hinge leaves.

If you need to plane the top of a door, usually you won't have to remove it from its hinges.

To trim bottom or sides, mark high spots, then tap out hinge pins -- bottom first.

Brace the door for planing. Work from the edges toward the middle.

If you plane the hinge side a lot, you may have to reset the hinges.
