About this Project

When cutting off a panel door, use a knife to cut a line wherever you will be cutting across the grain. To avoid splintering the door face, make your saw cut below that line.

Newer, solid-core doors are filled with a soft type of particleboard; there is solid wood only for an inch or so around the door perimeter. If you have to cut off more than an inch on such a door, the particleboard will be exposed and will require a couple of coats of sealer.

Trimming a hollow-core door is more complex (see Steps 1-2).
