Caulking and Applying Mastic

Key Techniques
Make sure the joint to be caulked is free of dirt and grease and there are no gaps wider than your bead of caulk. Snip the nozzle of the caulk tube at about a 45-degree angle. The closer to the tip you cut, the smaller the bead will be. You may need to puncture the inside seal with a long nail. Squeeze the handle until caulk starts coming out; move smoothly to apply an even bead.

To attach paneling to walls, apply a bead of adhesive on either the wall or the back of the panel. Use a notched trowel or make a squiggle pattern using a caulking gun. Press the panel against the wall, then pull it out slightly. Wait for a few minutes for the adhesive to get tacky (the manufacturer's instructions will tell you how long), then press the materials together again.

For a smooth, even application, use a notched trowel to apply adhesives. Check the adhesive container for the type and size of notches the trowel should have. Apply the adhesive with the trowel held nearly parallel to the surface to make sure it sticks. Tilt the trowel up at about a 45-degree angle and press firmly as you spread the adhesive.
