Rightsizing a Chandelier

At 5 feet wide, this fixture overpowers the table. Not helping are the dark shades that add even more visual weight, and the straight lines of the connecting bar, which make the fixture look even longer than it is.

The style of this simple, understated pendant lamp complements the simple table and chairs. But the fixture is too small to adequately light the table. If you prefer a pendant style, try placing two over a rectangular table.

(Keep in mind the general rule that chandelier width be narrower than table length.) A better choice for this single fixture would be a round table with a relatively small diameter.

As a rule, a chandelier should have a diameter at least 2 feet narrower than the table length.

This 4-foot fixture is the correct size for the 6-foot table. The glass shades are light in color, keeping them from drawing too much attention.
