Rightsizing a Chandelier

Before you shop for a hanging light fixture, consider the size of the table you'll be illuminating. The correct proportion will ensure that the fixture doesn't overpower (or underlight) the surface.

At 5 feet wide, this fixture overpowers the table. Not helping are the dark shades that add even more visual weight, and the straight lines of the connecting bar, which make the fixture look even longer than it is.

Too Small

The style of this simple, understated pendant lamp complements the simple table and chairs. But the fixture is too small to adequately light the table. If you prefer a pendant style, try placing two over a rectangular table.

(Keep in mind the general rule that chandelier width be narrower than table length.) A better choice for this single fixture would be a round table with a relatively small diameter.
