In keeping with an earthy color palette, the homeowners of this Asian-style kitchen chose honey-tone bamboo plank flooring. The flooring reflects light, which keeps the room bright and airy.
Renewable bamboo floors come in different patterns and plank sizes to complement a variety of kitchen styles. Bamboo can be stained in a variety of colors; just make sure to use water-base stains and top coats that are labeled as low-VOC emission products to ensure the bamboo stays earth-friendly.

Limestone like marble is very porous and should be sealed as recommeded for the slate flooring. It is also vulnerable to acid damage from citrus etc.
2/20/2010 01:36:30 PM Report AbuseCork is susceptable to water also. The backing on egineered cork floors can delaminate. Some of the surface finishes will wear through making it more of a light traffic product. Natural cork will hold up better in heavy wear areas and should be resealed periodically like wood floors.
2/20/2010 01:34:05 PM Report AbuseDon't be decieved, engineered wood is as susceptable to water as solid wood. The engineering prevents contaction and expansion from humidity fluctuations and is good in remodeling because it will transition to the other floor areas being thinner than 3/4" solid. It comes in 3/8" 5/16" etc. Check the thickness of the top wear layer. It varies widely and that is the detemining factor of life expectancy. Low end engineered wood from the Big Box Home Centers is often paper thin.
2/20/2010 01:28:56 PM Report AbuseThere are multiple suppliers of bamboo flooring. Mostly engineered. Be careful in selection the finish. I have seen a lot where the finish does not hold up. The bamboo itself resists denting. Buy from a trusted supplier who will warranty the product. Know what the warranty covers specifically.
