Revamp Cabinets with Painted Stripes

Update tired cabinets with a eyecatching paint treatment and give your kitchen a whole new personality.

What You Need:
  • water-base primer
  • red latex paint (we used Sherwin-Williams Rave Red #6608)
  • acrylic paints: Plaid FolkArt Brilliant Blue #641, English Mustard #959, French Vanilla #431, Hauser Medium Green #460, and Real Brown #231
  • paintbrush: 3-inch flat
  • artist's brushes: one 1-inch flat, one 1/2-inch flat
  • sandpaper
  • tack cloth
  • painter's tape
  • straightedge
  • T-square
  • cork-back rulers: one 6-inch, one 12-inch
  • crafts knife
  • semigloss water-base polyurethane

Instructions:

Sand the cabinets lightly, and wipe with a tack cloth. Apply a coat of primer, and let it dry. Apply two coats of red latex paint, allowing paint to dry thoroughly after each coat. Let the red base coat dry overnight before starting the stripes.

On the open cabinet backs, use a pencil and ruler to mark vertical lines at random widths for stripes. Measure the rectangles on the door and drawer fronts, working from the outside in. Measure and mark the widths in several places and connect the lines using a T-square or ruler.

Firmly press tape in place on some of the penciled lines. To get crisp corners, use a straightedge and a crafts knife to miter the tape in the corners. Paint stripes in the colors of your choice. Carefully remove the tape. Let the paint dry.

Apply tape for additional stripes, paint the stripes and let dry. Continue taping and painting until you've reached the desired effect. Remove any remaining tape.

After the paint dries thoroughly, apply two coats of polyurethane, allowing drying time after each coat.
