Countertops covered with plastic laminate are fairly durable and economical; thus, they are the most common surfacing choice for base cabinets (see Step 5 for other options). If your layout is straightforward, you can buy a ready-made, post-form top, which has a curved front lip and a backsplash. Or, you can laminate or order your own square-edged top. Recognize your limits, however. If your walls are more than 3/8 inch out of square or the situation entails a complicated configuration, call in a countertop professional.
