How to Update a Cabinet Door with Scandinavian-Style Stencils

Turn an ordinary cabinet door into something special with Scandinavian-style stenciling. We show you how.

What You Need
  • Screwdriver
  • Sandpaper
  • Tack cloth
  • Latex primer
  • Painter's tape
  • Paintbrush, stencil brush
  • Stencils (this design used four)
  • Stencil adhesive
  • Light-blue flat-finish interior latex paint
  • White flat-finish acrylic paint
  • Water-base polyurethane

How to Make It
  1. Remove cabinet doors and drawers, and then remove the hardware. Lightly sand all cabinet surfaces to be painted. Wipe away sanding dust with a tack cloth. Lay the doors flat and apply primer on sanded surfaces; let dry.

Note: These designs are made using four separate stencils. Arrange the motifs to suit your cabinets.
  2. Paint the doors, drawer fronts, toe-kick, valance, and sides of upper cabinets light blue using flat-finish interior latex paint; let dry.
  3. Spray the stencil for the lower cabinet doors with stencil adhesive. Press the stencil in place on a lower cabinet door, referring to the photograph for placement ideas. Stencil the motifs using white flat-finish acrylic paint and a stencil brush; let dry. Repeat on the remaining lower cabinet doors, cleaning the stencil frequently to avoid paint buildup. Repeat the process with the stencils for the upper cabinet doors, drawer fronts, and valance.
  4. Once paint dries, apply several coats of water-base polyurethane, letting each coat dry thoroughly. Attach hardware, then rehang doors and replace drawers.
