How to Update a Cabinet Door with Arts and Crafts Style Stenciling
Turn an ordinary cabinet door into something special with Arts and Crafts style stenciling. We show you how.
- Screwdriver
- Sandpaper
- Tack cloth
- Latex primer
- Painter's tape
- Paintbrush
- Arts and Crafts style stencils
- Stencil adhesive
- Pale-green flat-finish latex paint
- Paintstiks: Turquoise, Phthalo Blue, Burnt Sienna, and Sap Green
- Varnish
- Remove cabinet doors and drawers, and then remove the hardware. Lightly sand all cabinet surfaces to be painted. Wipe away sanding dust with a tack cloth. Lay the doors flat and apply primer on sanded surfaces; let dry.
- Tape off rails and stiles on cabinet doors. Apply two coats of pale green flat-finish latex paint, letting the surface dry thoroughly after each coat.
- Lightly spray the back of the stencil with a stencil adhesive. For each door panel, center the floral motif at the top. Using Paintstiks as directed on package, apply Turquoise to the stencil's upper floral portions. Apply Phthalo Blue to the tips of the upper floral portions, blending it into the Turquoise. Apply Burnt Sienna to the lower floral portions and to some of the bars, leaving some areas unpainted. Apply Sap Green and Phthalo Blue randomly to the remaining bars on this portion of the stencil, blending the colors.
- Center the bar portion of the stencil along the bottom edge of each door panel. Stencil with Burnt Sienna, Sap Green, and Phthalo Blue, blending the colors. Center the stencil's bars on the sides, making sure all the bars match up and run the same distance from the edges. (Door widths may vary; experiment on paper before starting.) Stencil the remaining bars in the same manner and repeat on each door panel to complete the design.
- Let paint dry for 24-48 hours. Apply one coat of varnish, and remove the tape.
