Cabinet Makeover: Beaded-Board Basics

If you think your kitchen cabinets are beyond repair, don't despair. With a little creativity and elbow grease, you can revive the face of almost any cabinet door.

  1. Using a router, remove the door's center panel. Chisel out the rounded corners left by the router so right angles remain.
  2. Sand, wipe with a cloth, clean with sodium triphosphate solution, apply stain-blocking primer, then semigloss latex paint.
  3. Wash a darker hue mixed with glaze over the frame to give the appearance of age.
  4. Cut a sheet of beaded-board paneling to the size of the frame opening. Coat the paneling with primer in the same base color used on the frame.
  5. When dry, paint it with white or off-white semigloss latex paint. While the white paint is still wet, lightly drag a screwdriver down the grooves of the paneling, allowing the undercoat to show through.

Why go through all that when you can purchase new bead board cabinet doors probably for about the same or close to the same price as buying all the products, tools and hardware and time of doing the work.
