Repair Options

Hardwood blocks

Use 2x2 hardwood blocks about 4 inches long to tighten joints between treads and risers. Glue and screw to both surfaces.

Metal angles

If the entire tread is loose, use two or three metal angle brackets to tighten it down to the riser.

New wedges

If old wedges are loose, remove them and replace with new ones. If a wedge is stuck but not supporting the tread, use a chisel to remove it.
