Silencing Squeaky Stairs from Above

Repair Options

Powdered graphite

Lubricating squeaks with powdered graphite may quiet them, but only temporarily.



Nails or screws

For a permanent fix, drill pilot holes at opposing angles and drive in ring-shank flooring nails.



Wedges

You can also coat wedges with glue, tap into place, and let dry. Cut off wedge ends with a utility knife.



Molding

For uncarpeted stairs, you can tighten joints with 3/4-inch quarter round molding. Drill pilot holes and use glue and finishing nails to secure the molding to both risers and treads. sink the nailheads with a nailset.
