If you're looking for some new panes to brighten your home, read on to find out your best bets in windows.
Window Types
Most of us look through windows, not at them. Your eyes will pop at the number of decisions you need to make when you're choosing windows for a remodeling project.
Start your window shopping with a look at your options for window materials -- primarily wood, vinyl, aluminum, and fiberglass. The majority of today's homeowners opt for some variety of wood windows, but vinyl window sales are coming on strong.
Both wood and vinyl offer good insulating values and strength. Many homeowners prefer wood for its natural appeal and warm look, but vinyl windows cost much less. In addition, vinyl carries the promise of low maintenance: Unlike wood, vinyl does not need to be painted or stained -- a particular plus on the exterior.
Combining wood on the interior with a vinyl or aluminum exterior cladding offers the best of both worlds: low-maintenance outside combined with the look and feel of wood on the interior. Although these types of windows tend to be more expensive than all-wood or all-vinyl units, many remodelers find them an ideal choice.
The popularity of aluminum windows has dwindled, mostly because aluminum doesn't insulate as well as other window framing materials. However, aluminum windows are fine for some milder regions of the country, as well as in commercial applications requiring higher strength.
Another material emerging in the market is fiberglass, which combines the higher strength and stability of aluminum with the insulating properties of wood and vinyl. It usually costs more than wood or vinyl.
