Sealing Windows with Vinyl and Felt
About this Project
Rolled vinyl, felt, and other gasket-type weather stripping attach to either the window frame or sash. When the window closes, they compress to seal air leaks. There are a wide variety of styles, including versions attached to rigid or flexible metal strips, as well as soft goods. Bulbous types provide more surface for better seals.
All are easy to install. Some, such as felt, must be mounted on the inside of windows and can be an eyesore. Felt also deteriorates fairly rapidly. Stretch the gasket material slightly as you attach it, making sure there are no gaps at corners.
Exterior installation provides a tighter seal and is less conspicuous. But you may need get out the ladder; avoid leaning way out of an upper-story window to drive in those last few nails.
