A Trio of Great Garages
Let the stories of these three innovative projects inspire your own planning process.
Shared Arrangement
When this garage was built, the designer was sensitive to the existing architecture of the home, repeating many of the details that distinguish the Tudor-style cottage. The garage functions as storage space and also as a screened porch that can be enjoyed year-round. Separate from the home, the porch is a distinct retreat. Some homeowners might have immediately dismissed the idea as highly impractical, but the plans go well beyond the standard issue.
The shape and exterior of the new building mimic the barrel vaults, dormers, and charming sleigh roof of the house. A brick foundation echoes that of the nearby deck and is clad with smooth cedar siding. The windows are positioned low enough to allow a view of the nearby pond and wooded area. The three windows on the front elevation echo the three windows on the house.
A sliding, barn-style door connects the garage and porch area. The attached screened porch measures 16x20 feet. Area rugs soften the concrete floors in the porch space. A stove extends the porch's usefulness into the cooler seasons, and ceiling fans allow for use during the summer.
