Adding Color to Concrete

About this Project

White and various shades of tan concrete can be ordered ready-made from some suppliers; they simply adjust the mix of raw materials to achieve the color. For more intense colors, you can add pigment to the concrete as it is mixed. This makes sense only if you need color throughout the slab, as you might for a rough broom-finish or aggregate surfaces or on steps, walks, or patios where the edges of the slab show. If you mix several batches of concrete, it's difficult to keep the color consistent. Most often, however, you'll need or want to add pigment only to the surface, where the color shows.
