For the nearly 50 million Americans who suffer from allergies, a new study may indicate a way to find relief. The study conducted by the University of California at Davis School of Medicine suggests that central vacuum systems can significantly relieve allergy patients' symptoms.
Study participants used both a portable vacuum and central vacuum, each for a period of three months. While cleaning with the central vacuum, participants reported feeling significantly better and experienced 50 percent fewer allergy symptoms.
A central vacuum system sucks dust into hidden pipes in your wall and funnels it into a canister in the basement or garage. Users simply plug a 30-foot, lightweight hose into special wall inlets located throughout the home. This system's motor is two to three times more powerful than a portable unit, and it traps and disposes of dust for good, unlike the portable vacuum, which recirculates some dust back into the air. A whole-house system can be installed in both new and existing homes for $1,000 - $1,500.
