Stencil designs by Diane Starkey
Your dog is the best dog in the world, right? So show the world how much you care about Max or Buddy or Molly or Princess by carving a Halloween pumpkin with his or her likeness. The American Kennel Club's list of top breeds inspired this series of pumpkin-carving stencils. The following slides will introduce you to our favorite dogs and the free downloadable carving stencils that bear their looks.
For all stencils: Start by cleaning out the pumpkin, scraping the flesh thinnest in the region in which you'll carve the design. Attach the pattern (enlarged on a photocopier) to the pumpkin with tape. Use a pin to make closely spaced pin pricks along the stencil lines, piercing the paper. Remove the pattern. Cut completely through solid lines (as shown on the stencil), but only peel away the skin within the dotted lines to enhance features.

11/14/2009 11:17:18 AM Report AbuseWe carved 4 for our 4 dogs and took awesome pictures. Many people commented about how realistic the images were and I told them they were templates. Really fun project for Halloween weekend!
11/5/2009 03:48:52 PM Report AbuseI had the stencil out for weeks and ran out of time to do it. My son and his girlfriend found the stencil and went to town on the pumpkin. I cannot tell you how great it looks. We put a candle inside and all the trick or treaters were oohhhing and ahhhing, called their parents to see it as well. Told my co-workers about it and I have to bring it in tomorrow. We took pictures of our boxers with the pumpkin. Great idea!
