Sea Turtle

An all-smiles sea turtle gets his fun protective shell from a large plastic bowl covered with green fleece.

What You Need:
  • Two sheets of green crafts foam
  • Hot glue and hot-glue gun
  • Lime green sweat suit and hooded sweat shirt
  • Two 9 x 12-inch pieces of green felt
  • One sheet each: white and black crafts foam
  • 3/8 yard green fleece
  • Large plastic bowl at least 10 inches wide
  • 12 inches green ribbon
  • Canvas tennis shoes
  • Green acrylic or fabric paint; paintbrush

Instructions:

Top: Cut geometric shapes from green foam (see photograph). Hot-glue shapes to front of sweat shirt, being careful to avoid the zipper area. Cut smaller geometric shapes from green felt. Hot-glue these onto the foam shapes. Create the look of a turtle's shell by using smaller-sized shapes to ring the outside of the design. Cut two nostril shapes from green foam and glue them to the top center of the hood. Cut two rounded eyelid shapes from green foam. Cut out holes where the eyeballs will show, making the holes a bit less than 2 inches across. Cut two 2-inch circles from white crafts foam for eyeballs and two 1/2-inch circles from black crafts foam for pupils. Hot-glue the black circles on top of the white circles. Glue the eyeballs to the bottoms of the green eyelids so they show through. Glue the completed eyes to the hood as shown.

Shell: Cut a piece of green fleece large enough to cover the outside of the plastic bowl and the top inch of the inside of the bowl; hot-glue to the bowl. Cut geometric shapes from the green foam; hot-glue these onto the shell, creating the same type of pattern you used on the top. Cut smaller geometric shapes from the green felt and hot-glue these onto the foam shapes. Cut a tail shape from green foam and glue it to the inside bottom of the shell so it extends down. Cut two 6-inch pieces of ribbon. Stitch (or hot-glue) the ribbon to the shirt and hot-glue the ribbon to the inside of the bowl to attach the shell.

Shoes: Remove laces from shoes and paint the laces green. Paint shoes green. Let the paint dry. Cut geometric shapes from green foam and glue to the tops of the shoes. Cut smaller geometric shapes from the green felt and glue to the foam.
