What You Need:
  • 1 yard of textured fur or bark-patterned fleece
  • Scissors
  • 1 yard of quilted backing
  • Pins
  • Thread
  • 4 feet of ribbon
  • Hook and loop fastener
  • 1 sheet of brown crafting foam, such as Fun Foam
  • Feather monarch butterflies
  • 4 artificial autumn foliage bushes
  • Straw hat
  • Moss
  • 2 artificial bird's nests, birds, and 4 bird eggs
  • Hot-glue gun and glue sticks

Instructions:

1. To make the tree trunk vest, fold the fabric in half. Lay your child's T-shirt over the folded fabric to serve as a pattern. Cut the fabric 1-1/2 inches from the side and shoulder seams of the T-shirt. The bottom front is cut shorter than the back, which is elongated. Make a "V" neckline by cutting triangular shapes from neck. Cut two quilted backing pieces: one to match the tree front and one to match the back. Place the right side of the quilted backing over the right side of its matching fur front or back and pin together. Sew around the edge of each set, leaving a 12-inch opening along the side seam. Trim away any excess fabric and turn both vest pieces right side out. Lay the finished front over the finished back, matching right sides together. Pin the side seams together and then stitch through the four layers of fabric. Sew one end of a 12-inch length of ribbon to each shoulder. The ribbons are tied together over the shoulder after the vest is pulled over the child's head. Hot-glue small strips of brown crafting foam and feathered butterflies to the finished trunk and glue small sections of foliage around the vest neck.

2. To make the wristbands, cut two quilted strips 7x3 inches long. Lay them right side down on the work surface. Fold the entire length of the top and bottom edges of each strip 1/2 inch into the center. Hot-glue these folds in place and hot-glue a 7-inch length of ribbon along the center of the band, trapping the folded edges and covering the remaining wrong side of the quilted backing. Cut four 2-inch lengths of ribbon and then fold one over each end of the wristband. Hot-glue them in place so they neatly cover the fabric ends. Glue a 2-inch section of loop fastener to each end of the wristbands. Trim the wristbands by gluing foliage and butterflies onto the right inside of the finished bands.

3. To make the hat, hot-glue pieces of moss to the underside, outer edge, and top of the hat brim. Cut branches of foliage off the bushes and glue to hat. Continue gluing branches and moss until the hat is disguised. Position the nests, eggs, and birds onto the branches and then glue them in place.
