Make a Black Cat Pot Holder for Halloween

Cast a spell on your kitchen this Halloween with a black cat pot holder you make from felted wool.

What You'll Need
  • Tracing paper
  • Adhesive tape
  • Felted wool: two 8-x-10-inch pieces of black and scraps of gold, dark olive, light olive, and rust
  • Glue stick
  • No. 8 perle cotton: black, olive, and rust
  • Embroidery needle

How to Make It
  1. Trace the pattern pieces individually onto tracing paper; cut out. Use adhesive tape to hold the pattern pieces to the felted wool when cutting out the shapes.
  2. From the black wool, cut two heads. From gold, cut one mouth. From dark olive, cut one of each eyebrow. From light olive, cut two eyes. From rust, cut two inner ears and one nose.
  3. Arrange the inner ears, mouth, nose, eyes, and eyebrows on one head, referring to the pattern for placement. When you're happy with the positions, use the glue stick to hold the wool pieces in place for appliqueing.
  4. Use rust perle cotton to blanket-stitch the mouth to the head and black perle cotton to backstitch across the center of the mouth.
  5. Make running stitches about 1/8 inch from the edges to attach the inner ears with rust and the eyes with olive. With black blanket stitches, applique the nose to the head. Use olive to attach the eyebrows with random straight stitches.
  6. Place the head pieces together with wrong sides facing. Sew the pieces together using black blanket stitches. Also, blanket-stitch with black along the bottom edge of each ear.
