Jumbo Spiders for Halloween

Never mind their chill-inspiring scurries, spiders have a place in every Halloween display. Create giant arachnids as a large decoration, or give the eight-legged creatures some style with a leopard-print body. Either way, you'll give a Halloween scare with these dangling "guests."

Materials
  • Aluminum foil
  • Masking tape
  • Celluclay
  • Acrylic paints in the colors of your choice (to make a leopard-print spider you will need black, off-white, and gold metallic)
  • Assorted paintbrushes
  • Rhinestones for eyes
  • Craft glue
  • Black chenille stems (4 for each spider)
  • Glue gun and hotmelt adhesive

Instructions
  1. For each spider, make two balls of aluminum foil -- a small one for the head and a larger one for the body. Tape the head and body together.
  2. Mix the Celluclay following the manufacturer's instructions. Apply a thin layer of the clay mixture to the body and head; let dry. Apply a second layer to the spider; let dry completely.
  3. Paint the spider with the colors and patterns of choice. To make a leopard-print spider as shown, give the spider an off-white base coat; let dry. Then dab gold spots over the base coat. Use a small paintbrush loaded with black to pounce (with the tip of the brush) black spots surrounding the gold.
  4. After the paint dries, use crafts glue to attach the rhinestone eyes to the head. Let the glue dry.
  5. Form the four chenille stems into eight legs by twisting the chenille stems together in the center. Turn the spider over and hot-glue the legs to the underside of the spider's belly. Let the glue dry completely; then shape the legs.
