Hallowedding: Make a Faux Candelabra

Add a touch of sophistication and fright to your dinner table with a spooky candelabra design.

What You Need
  • Plastic foam (We used Floral Styrofoam.)
  • Plastic-foam cutter (We used Floracraft Styro Wonder Cutter Plus.)
  • Straight pins
  • Crafts knife
  • Metal ruler
  • Crafts glue
  • Masking tape
  • Black spray paint (We used Krylon flat black.)
  • Wooden toothpicks
  • 3-inch wooden craft picks
  • Heat gun

How to Make It
  1. Download the patterns above and enlarge to your desired size.
  2. Cut out the patterns and pin them to the foam.
  3. With black paint, spray the patterns to create pattern silhouettes.
  4. Remove the patterns to reveal the candelabra shapes.
  5. With a crafts knife, cut away the excess foam in the larger sections.
  6. Note: If a piece of foam breaks, add a generous amount of glue, place toothpicks or craft picks into one side of the break, and then press the other section back into place.
  7. Hold the pieces together with masking tape until the glue dries.
  8. With the heated foam cutter, cut the curved shapes on each foam piece.
  9. Use a metal ruler and crafts knife to cut the straight lines, such as the taper shapes. A piece of scrap foam will serve as sandpaper to sand areas smooth if needed.
  10. For added strength, insert craft picks into curved areas, pushing the picks below the foam surface.
  11. With the heat gun, heat all foam surfaces until you hear a sizzle, indicating that the foam has shrunk slightly and become stiffer.
  12. Apply a generous amount of glue to the center cutout areas and gently slide the two foam pieces together to form the candelabra.
  13. Apply tape until the glue dries.
  14. In a well-ventilated area, apply several light coats of paint, allowing drying time between coats.
