Cut the Fabrics

• 4-inch square of felted black wool for applique foundation
• 4-1/2-inch square of felted brown tweed wool for pin backing and trim
• Scraps of felted gray tweed and orange wool for appliques
• Perle cotton or wool thread: black and orange
• 1-inch metal pin back
• Freezer paper
• Finished pin: About 3-1/4 x 3-1/2-inch

2. To felt wool, machine-wash it in a hot-water-wash, cool-rinse cycle with a small amount of detergent; machine-dry and steam-press. If you use wool from a piece of clothing, cut clothing apart and remove seams so the wool can shrink freely.

3. To use freezer paper for cutting the applique shapes, complete the following steps.

4. Lay the freezer paper, shiny side down, over the patterns. With a pencil, trace each pattern the correct number of times. Cut out the freezer-paper shapes.

5. Using a hot, dry iron, press the freezer paper shapes, shiny side down, onto the designated fabrics; let cool. Cut out the fabric shapes on the drawn lines. Peel off the freezer paper.

• From black wool, cut: 1 of Pattern A.
• From brown tweed, cut 1 of Pattern A
• 1-1/2 x 3-inch rectangle for bow
• From grey tweed, cut: 2 of Pattern B
• From orange wool, cut: 1 of Pattern C
