Download Stocking Pattern

1. Enlarge the pattern to scale, adding 1/2-inch seam allowances to the sides. Cut a stocking front and back from wool. With right sides facing, sew the front to the back, leaving the top edge open. Clip the curves, trim the seam allowances, and turn the stocking to the right side.
2. Cut a 13-inch-wide band of velvet long enough to go around the top for the cuff, adding 1/2-inch seam allowances to the ends. With right sides facing, join the short ends. Fold the cuff in half so the long raw edges match and wrong sides are facing. Machine-baste along the raw edges.
3. Using black thread, sew white buttons to the cuff. Slip the cuff inside the top of the stocking so the buttons face the wrong side of the stocking. Align the raw edges of the stocking and the cuff and sew around the top edge. Turn the cuff to the outside and down over the stocking.
4. Fold the cord in half and knot each end with an overhand knot. Sew each knot to the inside of the stocking along the seam line, forming a double-strand hanging cord.

1. Enlarge the pattern to scale. Cut out a complete red front and back. Cut two top bands and a cuff from off-white. Cut one bottom band from gold.
2. On the stocking front, pin the gold bottom band in place over the stocking. Zigzag along all the gold edges. Lay both off-white upper bands over the stocking front and zigzag them in place along all edges. These multiple layers will give extra body to the stocking top so it hangs better.
3. Working from the wrong side, trim most of the red felt away from under the gold felt. This will help eliminate bulk when turning the stocking. With right sides facing, lay the stocking back over the stocking front and sew them together leaving the top edge open. Clip the curves, trim the seams, and turn the stocking right side out.
4. Turn one end of the cuff under 3/4 inch and topstitch it in place using zigzag stitches. With wrong sides facing, sew the ends of the cuff together. Fold the cuff in half crosswise so the raw edges meet. Lightly press.
5. Slip the cuff over the stocking so the hem of the cuff aligns with the bottom of the off-white band and the fold aligns with the top edge. Pin the inner cuff to the inside of the stocking. Turn the stocking wrong side out and slip-stitch the cuff to the stocking.
6. To make the pom-poms, wind yarn around the cardboard 75 times. Pack the yarn tightly for a fuller pom-pom. After the yarn is wrapped, slip another strand of yarn between the loops and cardboard at any spot. Tie the yarn very tightly in a single knot. Slip the yarn off the cardboard. Pull the knot as tightly as possible and secure it with a second knot. Clip the loops opposite the knot so the yarn releases into a pom-pom. Fluff the pom-pom and trim it with scissors to be as circular as possible. Repeat to make six pom-poms. Tack five pom-poms to the lower edge of the cuff, spacing them evenly. Tack the remaining pom-pom to the toe.
7. Tie a knot in each end of the hanging loop. Sew each knot to the inside of the stocking at the seam line.

1. Enlarge the stocking pattern to scale, adding 1/2-inch seam allowances to the sides. Cut a front and a back from the boiled wool fabric.
2. Arrange the wool scraps into four groups of three each, mixing the colors as desired. From each set cut a 4-3/4-inch circle, a 3-1/2-inch circle, and a 1-3/4-inch circle.
3. Center the small circles over the medium circles and sew them in place with yarn using long stitches or blanket stitches. Repeat for the medium circles, centering them on the large circles. Starting about 3 1/2 inches from the top, sew a circle stack to the center of the stocking. Repeat with the other circles, spacing them about 1/2 inch apart. See the photograph for details.
4. With right sides facing and using 1/2-inch seam allowances, sew the stocking front to the stocking back, leaving the top edge open. Clip the curves, trim the seams, and turn the stocking to the right side.
5. Turn under the upper 1 1/2 inches of the stocking. Using long stitches, sew the hem in place. Knot the ends of the rickrack and sew them to the inside of the stocking at the seam lines to create a hanger.
