Make Sequin-Studded Ornaments for Christmas

This Christmas, learn how to make felt-covered ornaments that coordinate perfectly with your holiday decorations.

What You'll Need
  • 3- and 4-inch plastic-foam balls
  • 9-x-12-inch felt pieces in assorted colors
  • Boxes of 1/2-inch straight pins
  • Boxes of 1/2- and 1-inch pearl, gold, and colored corsage pins
  • Bags of 5/8-inch spoke sequins in silver, gold, and other assorted colors
  • Bags of 8- and 10-mm sequin cups in assorted colors
  • Three 5-yard spools of holiday ribbon in 1/8-, 1/4-, and 1/2-inch widths
  • 3-5 yards of assorted silver and gold trims
  • Colored rickrack in 1/4- and 5/8-inch widths
  • Scissors and pinking shears

How to Make It
  1. Pin patterns (available online at www.diyideas.com/ornaments) to the felt and cut out six pieces of felt to cover a ball.
  2. Secure pieces to the top and bottom of the ball with straight pins. Be sure to place the pieces close together, align top and bottom edges, and pull each piece downward tightly to ensure the felt is smooth.
  3. Pin piece edges to the ball.
  4. Cover seams and pins with ribbons cut to fit the ball's circumference. Place the widest ribbons first, and then top with narrower trims. Pin the ribbon evenly over a seam and pin to the ball's top center.
  5. Pull the ribbon down, secure to the ball's bottom center with a pin.
  6. Pull the end back up to the top, overlap the ends, and pin to the ball.
  7. Repeat for other ribbons.
  8. Pin six-point-star patterns to the felt and cut them out.
  9. Place a felt star on top of the ornament, positioning point between ribbons.
  10. Secure the star to the ball with pearl-headed pins placed around the star's outer edges and radiating from the center out to each tip.
  11. Finish ends with seasonal shapes cut from complementary-hued felt or with shimmering arrangements of stacked sequins and corsage pins.
  12. You may also cap each end with a large sequin and a pretty pin.
