What You Need:
  • 8-1/2 x 11-inch color enlargement of an antique postcard
  • 11 x 7-inch piece of photo transfer paper
  • 11 x 7-inch piece of white cotton fabric for design transfer
  • 1/2 yard of 60-inch-wide wool fabric
  • 1 yard of 45-inch-wide plaid taffeta fabric
  • Matching thread
  • 10 x 14-inch pillow form
  • 1-1/2 yards of 1-1/2-inch-wide gold flat lace

Instructions:

1. Center an enlarged postcard design on an 11 x 7-inch piece of photo transfer paper at a photocopy center, creating a mirror image of the design. Transfer the design onto the white fabric according to the manufacturer's directions. 2. Cut two wool horizontal sashing strips and two vertical sashing strips, each 2-1/2 x 11 inches. Cut a 16-1/2 x 12-1/2-inch wool back. For taffeta ruffle, cut 4-1/2-inch-wide bias strips that are twice the perimeter of the pillow, piecing the fabric as necessary. 3. Using 1/4-inch seams, stitch horizontal sashing strips to the top and bottom edge of the white fabric with the transferred design. Stitch the vertical sashing strips to each side of the design. 4. For ruffle, stitch the taffeta bias strip ends together to form a continuous loop. Press ruffle fabric in half, wrong sides facing. Gather raw edges. Stitch ruffle around the outside edge of the pillow front. 5. With right sides facing, stitch pillow front to back around outside edge, keeping ruffle free and leaving an opening for turning. Trim the corners. Turn to right side. Insert the pillow form and stitch the opening closed. Hand-stitch lace on around the design in the center of the sashing strips.
