• 5-inch square of burgundy or blue felted wool for applique foundation and backing
• 3-inch square of white felted wool for snowman applique
• Scrap of light blue or burgundy felted wool for heart applique
• Freezer paper
• Embroidery floss: black, white, orange, blue, burgundy, or other desired colors to complement fabrics

1. To felt the wool, machine-wash the fabric in a hot-water wash, cool-rinse cycle with a small amount of detergent. Machine-dry on high heat and steam-press.
2. Position the freezer paper, shiny side down, over the patterns in the pattern pack. Trace each pattern the number of times indicated. Cut out the shapes along the traced lines.
3. Using a hot, dry iron, press a freezer-paper shape, shiny side down, onto the front of a fabric piece; let cool. Cut out the fabric shape along the pattern edges. Pell off the freezer paper.
4. To make the best use of fabric, follow this order: Press and cut two Pattern A foundations from burgundy or blue wool. Press and cut one Pattern B body from white wool. Press and cut one Pattern C heart from light blue or burgundy wool.
5. Pin the heart on the snowman body. Use a single strand of matching embroidery floss to tack the heart to the snowman.
6. Using two strands of black embroidery floss, make five French knots for eyes and buttons. Using two strands of embroidery floss, stitch a V-shape for the nose.
7. Position the snowman on the oval foundation; baste in place. Using one strand of white embroidery floss, tack the snowman in place and make a star stitch on the foundation. To make a star stitch, make a cross-shape in the desired size, then make a smaller X-shape over the cross-shape, intersecting the middles.
8. Use six strands of embroidery floss in a desired color to make the snowman's scarf. Thread both ends of the floss through a large-eye needle to create a thread loop. Push the needle down through the foundation on one side of the snowman's neck. Bring the needle up at the other neck edge and pass the needle through the loop. Pull gently to tighten the loop. Knot each thread end about 1/2 inch from the loop. Trim excess thread.
9. Layer the appliqued foundation and the remaining oval with wrong sides together; baste. Using six strands of burgundy or blue embroidery floss, blanket-stitch around the edges of the pin. Attach a pin back to the pin.
