Crochet a Mitten Gift Topper

A simple single crochet pattern makes these mini mittens a holiday delight.

What You Need
  • 100% mercerized cotton -- white thread: 400 yds. (366m); colored thread: 350 yds. (320m); bedspread weight
  • Size 2 (2.5mm) steel crochet hook OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE
  • Brass safety pin (for mittens)
  • Blunt-end yarn needle
  • Optional finishing supplies: ribbon for ties or hanging loops; 3/4-inch magnet button; fast-drying glue

How to Make It

With G, ch 17, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across -- 16 sc; ch 1, turn. Sc in each sc across; join F, ch 1, turn.

Thumb inc 1: Sc in first 7 sc, 2 sc in each of next 2 sc; sc to end of row; ch 1, turn.

Thumb inc 2: Sc in first 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc; sc to end of row; join G, ch 1, turn.

Thumb inc 3: Sc in first 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc; sc to end of row, ch 1, turn.

Begin palm of hand: Sc across 8 st, sk next 6 sc, sc across rem 8 sc; change to F, ch 1, turn. Working over 16 sts, work 2 rows with B, 2 rows with G, 2 rows with F. With G, (sc 2 tog) across -- 8 sts; ch 1, turn. (Sc 2 tog) across -- 4 sts; fasten off, leaving a long tail.


Thumb

Join G in first of 6 skipped sts, ch 1, work sc in each of 6 sts; join with sl st for first sc.

Next rnd: Join F and sc in each st around; join.

Next rnd: (Sc 2 tog) around -- 3 sts; fasten off, leaving a long tail.


Cuff Ribbing

Join F at beg of ch-17 and work 16 dc across. Join G, ch 2, (work BPdc in next st, FPdc in next st) across; end with BPdc in last st; fasten off.


Finishing

Weave long tail at thumb through top lps of rem 3 sts, gather and fasten securely. Sew any space bet thumb and hand closed. Weave long tail at top edge through top loops of rem 4 sts, gather tightly, and fasten securely. Sew side seam. Weave in loose ends. With G, attach yarn inside Mitten at cuff, ch 30 or desired length, attach it to other Mitten at inside of cuff. Wrap chain around brass safety pin to secure.
