Crochet a Christmas Tree Gift Topper

Crochet a fun accent to for your tree or package with this cute Christmas tree gift topper.

What You Need
  • 100% mercerized cotton -- white thread: 400 yds. (366m); colored thread: 350 yds. (320m); bedspread weight
  • Size 2 (2.5mm) steel crochet hook OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE
  • Mini pony beads (for tree and wreath)
  • Blunt-end yarn needle
  • Optional finishing supplies: ribbon for ties or hanging loops; 3/4-inch magnet button; fast-drying glue

How to Make It

With C, ch 3, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across -- 2 sc; ch 1, turn.

Row 2: Work 2 sc in each sc; ch 1, turn.

Row 3: Sc in each sc across; ch 1, turn.

Row 4: Work 2 sc in first sc, sc to last sc, work 2 sc in last sc; ch 1, turn. Rep Rows 3-4 until there are 26 sts in row; fasten off.


Shape Trunk

Sk first 11 sts along wider edge; join D and sc across next 4 sts, ch 1, turn. Work 5 more rows; fasten off.


Edging

Attach D at base of trunk, sc along side, 3 sc in corner, along bottom, 3 sc in corner, and up side of trunk; fasten off. In same manner, use C to sc around edges of Tree, working 3 sc in each corner; fasten off.


Star

With E, ch 3, join with st st to form ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, work 10 sc in ring; join with sl st to first sc.

Rnd 2: Ch 2, dc in same sc as join; *ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch from hook; in next sc work dc, ch 2, and sl st;** ch 2, dc in next sc; rep from * around, end last rep at **; join to first ch of beg ch-2; fasten off.


Finishing

Weave in loose ends. Sew pony beads to Tree. Sew Star at top. Use the piece to cut a shape from green felt. Glue felt to back. Tack package ties or a hanging loop to the back, or adhere a magnet button.
